The Society of Professionals, Scientists, and Engineers is an independent organization of professional scientists and engineers employed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). SPSE was formed on May 23, 1973, in response to negative management policies during the 1970s. During that period, a series of layoffs that seemed based on arbitrary and unfair criteria were held to the detriment of the Laboratory. SPSE was formed to address these and other concerns of professionals at LLNL (see the SPSE Position Paper, 1976). Typically, an individual is hard pressed to effect change, but an active member in a strong group can be a powerful force in deciding and instituting change. SPSE continues its efforts to make LLNL a better place to work.

[A Picture of Einstein]

"I consider it important, indeed urgently necessary, for intellectual workers to get together, both to protect their own economic status and also, generally speaking, to secure their influence in the political field."

Albert Einstein, from a letter dated May 1944

SPSE, an employee organization serving LLNL's professional staff, works to provide a more congenial professional working environment in part by...

Distributing news and viewpoints useful to LLNL professionals

Representing professionals involved in job discrimination, performance and salary disputes

Providing employees with information about their rights

Providing its members with extensive analyses of LLNL salary actions and with ranking information

SPSE is a nonprofit labor organization 501(c)5 in the state of California. It is managed by an Executive Board consisting of four officers and ten board members. The Board meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
